Specific requirements of the role:
• The following list of duties and responsibilities is intended to assist Heads of Department to reach an understanding of the nature and extent of their role. It is also useful for self evaluation.
Curriculum/Work Programs/Units of Work:
• To write or to coordinate and supervise the writing of work programs for accreditation by the Queensland Studies Authority and the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board;
• To carry out a regular evaluation of work programs of subjects in the Department and to reframe them as necessary;
• To be aware and to inform teachers of any requirements or procedures of the Queensland Studies Authority relevant to the Department;
• To assist teachers to develop elective outlines and/or units of work according to frameworks set down by curriculum teams such as the Middle School Curriculum Group and/or Director of Learning and Teaching;
• To assist teachers to modify units of work in order to ensure differentiation for special needs of students – e.g. those with learning difficulties and the gifted and talented;
• Liaison with Junior School Key Teacher/Coordinators and Middle School Coordinators to ensure continuity of curriculum across College
• Moderation of Standards
• To ensure that tests and examinations are set and other assessment procedures followed such as to ensure fair and valid assessment and the maintenance of proper standards and records;
• To provide dates of assessment and subject excursions to the Deputy Principal;
• To be responsible to the Director for Learning and Teaching for internal moderation within the Department and to ensure comparable standards of testing and marking;
• To be responsible for the maintenance of student profiles within the subject area and to ensure that adequate information is provided to the Queensland Studies Authority at the times of certification and monitoring, in cooperation with the Director for Learning and Teaching;
• To monitor the performances of students in the subject area and address any areas of concern to the Director for Learning and Teaching or Deputy Principal.
• Teacher Supervision, Organization and Development
• To be responsible to the Principal through the Director of Learning and Teaching, for the standard of instruction in the department;
• To hold regular meetings (formal or informal) with members of the department;
• To conduct year level meetings;
• To assist and encourage teachers in their professional development associated with the subject area;
• To supervise and coordinate the work of any ancillary staff in the department;
• To advise and assist teachers in addressing student needs and difficulties;
• To consult with parents as necessary, and to advise the Deputy Principal regarding matters of concern.
Selection criteria:
• Evidence of active involvement in a Christian denomination and/or ability to support the Christian ethos of the college, including its worship and devotions program.
• Demonstrated personal and interpersonal skills that foster effective learning partnerships with parents and other staff.
• Demonstrated ability to develop warm, caring relationships with students while maintaining a positive, focused learning environment. An understanding of the particular needs of young people and demonstrated skills in meeting these needs in the context of the classroom and in pastoral care groups.
• Ability to model a range of effective teaching and learning strategies to ensure the needs of all students in the classroom are met.
• Evidence of a personal commitment to continuous self-evaluation and lifelong learning.
